Victorian Tilt Top Table
If Victorian furniture is your favorite style, you cannot go wrong with this small tilt top table. I copied the design off an antique I restored about 20 or so years ago. Since then I have made several of these as wedding gifts. We will be using cherry and the pedestal is glued up from smaller boards, selected to look like one thick piece. The three legs dovetail into the pedestal. The hinge for the tilt action is all wood, just like the original. A banjo catch fixes the top when in use. You will learn spindle turning, sliding dovetail joinery, wooden hinge making, and how to make a perfect circle among many other things. A small project packed with learning options. Beginners welcome, intermediate encouraged, and masters desired!
Class offered July 9 - 14, 2012
Materials Fee: $149.80
Teaching Fee: $750.00
Greene & Greene Coffee Table
This is an original design by your instructor and owner, Dale Barnard. This coffee table is inspired by the Robinson House Dining Table, a Greene & Greene masterpiece. This small coffee table has many of the same challenges of its larger "father". The border that sits proud of the veneered top is a unique joinery problem that is solved in the class with pattern routing and special bits. We will use African mahogany and genuine ebony for the wood in the table, sticking true to G & G's later furniture. And working with 12/4 on the base incorporates a double mortise & tenon joint and through tenons on the "legs". Design details of the finer points of various radius shaping are also taught. Learn the difference between "sort-of" Greene & Greene and the real thing, how to stay true to the design. Not only do you learn real Greene & Greene design but you get to take it home with you, put it your home as a constant reminder of how beautiful good design can be.

Greene & Greene Grandfather Clock
This original design by your instructor is well thought out and very true to the philosophy and design vocabulary of the Greene brothers. The face will be made in the class, cocobolo numbers and ebony pegs with custom made hands as well. Even the interlocking back of the clock is a work of art. The attention to detail on this project is something to be proud of and I think Charles and Henry would approve. Complete with a hiding place and Hermle clock movement #13044 and stick pendulum, will be purchased from Klockit, Inc.. All hardware is of top quality and custom made brass pulls will be available for purchase. Mortise & tenon construction, finger joints, cloud lifts, pattern routing, glass door building, hanging two full inset doors, making stepped moldings, and installing the movement are all taught in this class. Come to this class and step up to the challenge for a truly unique experience and take home a clock with a retail value of $9500. The material costs for the class will be determined the month prior to the class, so call for exact price then. Estimated materials cost is $1000. Plus clock movement.

Approximate Material Cost: $1,000.00
Teaching fee: $1,350.00

The Classic Bow Arm Morris Chair
Many students like this class because of the steam bending of the arms. They are quartersawn oak (select), 1" finish thickness, 6" wide and 42" long. Most people are surprised at how simple it is and how much clamping pressure it takes. There are special tricks and techniques used to attach the bent arms to the front and back legs with through tenons the adjustable back has bandsawn curved slats. We do a quartersawn grain on all four sides of the front and back legs with a unique system - very simple and quick but not 45 degree angled sides. No upholstery is included but it will be explained and discussed. The footstool plan will be included but not made in the class. There will be footstool kits available for purchase. If time permits we will use the lathe for some simple beginner spindle turning. Otherwise, we will use dowels and the drill press to make the pivot pins and the adjuster pins. When your piece is completed you will have a recliner that you will pass down to your children. I use mine every day to relax as I think of other new classes for students to enjoy.

The Grove Park Rocking Chair
This project is an excellent introduction to chairs because a curved crest rail which is an essential element in all chairs. It is a band sawn curve and we use several techniques to fair out the curve. The seat is trapezoidal which utilizes compound angle tenons. Every joint is mortise & tenon. There are no fasteners. We also do a through-tenon on the arms. A special joint in Arts & Crafts that any accomplished woodworker should know how to do. There is also pattern routing, shaping that is an efficient system for making duplicate parts. After completing this chair, there are few chairs that you couldn't build using these techniques. The cane seat will be available for purchase at the Shop. Besides all the skills you will learn, you will have a beautiful reproduction of the Grove Park Inn Rocker to enjoy and pass on to your grandchildren someday.

Understanding Finishing
| |
When I first started teaching, I noticed many students are confused and intimidated when facing finishing decisions and situations. This class is designed to correct that problem. With over 35 years professional finishing experience, you won't be disappointed. I've written a small booklet which explains the various products, how to use them and when. This is outlined in the class. You can bring an unfinished project to finish in the class (subject to approval). Bring your spray gun if you have one and you can use it in the class with expert instruction. You will take home a few step boards which show each step to attain classic finishes. I've added one on crinkle paint for an authentic antique painted look. Analine (aniline) dye staining, ammonia fuming, glazing stains, lacquer top coats, spray finishing, shellacs, even finishing the finish will be terms you will understand completely after taking this class. Note: water based top coats NOT included in this class. Organic Vapor Respirator required for class.

The Stickley Bed
This bed is very similar to the one in the modern Stickley catalogue. We will make the bed to fit your mattress, or bring your measurements. You will learn the different ways to join the rails to the foot board and head board, how to size the bed to fit various mattresses. We will be using top quality white oak, quartersawn for stability and beauty. Throughout mortise and tenon joinery will be used on the head board and foot board. This bed will have wood slats made of maple. The materials costs for this bed will be figured out when it is ordered. After taking one of our bed classes most students are fully capable of designing and building other bed styles to fit any mattress size, with or without box springs. Like all other furniture you make yourself it becomes an heirloom to last for generations. A wonderful gift for parents or children.

New! Box Making Class
|
OK, box-makers -- Here's a class tailored just for you. The first two days will be mostly making a set of five nesting boxes. They will be cherry with birch or maple pegs. If you've never made this little jewel you are missing out on a very fun project that the ladies love to receive as gifts. If you just want to make these, just come for the first two days. Day 3 - 4 - 5 will be spent making a traditional dovetailed jewelry box with a mechanical lock and a contemporary box of your own design. Let your ideas roam and challenge the instructor, please. This will be a fun week and we'll see if we can't make your box project the best one ever. We will even lacquer or stain them if time permits. Sculpted Maloof Inspired Rocker
This class is not for beginners and not for the fainthearted. It is intense. Many unusual and new skills for the accomplished wood craftsman are learned in this class. We will use the classic Maloof joint for attaching the seat to the legs. Sculpture is involved by carving with grinders and rasps. We will laminate the curves on the flexible back slats and the rockers. The crest rail is coopered and routed. I could go on but you get the idea. Many jigs and time saving tricks are used. We will provide the wood of your choice, which will vary the material costs. This class is a great time and an opportunity to build a beautiful family heirloom while meeting other accomplished woodworkers. This is Part 1 of a two part class. Part 2 is scheduled November 12 - 16, 2012.

New! Full Size Shaker Bed
This beautiful Shaker bed design was inspired by one that is in the Pleasant Hill Shaker Community. The original one was made in the late 19th century and was walnut, is near Harrodsburg Kentucky. We use French Bed Bolts (the strongest joint possible for head board to side rail joinery) and the nut is mortised and hidden by a round inlay. This design is for a full size mattress and we make the complete bed, including maple slats. You will learn the best and strongest way to make a knock-down bed, beginning spindle turning, mortise & tenon joinery and a few tricks for saving time without sacrificing quality. The wood type is available in walnut, cherry and maple other size beds, subject to prior approval. Choose your bed size, wood species, and leave the design up to your instructor... which is the beautiful Shaker style. This bed will survive long after we are gone and provide the next generation more enjoyment knowing it was made by their ancestor. Building quality furniture that lasts will make the world a better place for the people we love most, our children.

Greene & Greene Wall Cabinet
This small curio cabinet was inspired by the wall cabinetry in the Thorsen House dining room. The details are all classic Greene & Greene. The class is fairly straight forward until we make the door, probably one of the most complex small cabinet doors ever conceived. A small project like this, chock full of details is not only fun to make, but a joy to own. This is high art indeed. There is a special small hiding place, but don’t tell anyone! Also available is a weekend glass class to make the stained art glass for the door immediately after the class. Most students do both classes.
Class offered: June 4 - 8, 2012
Materials Fee: $ 214.00
Teaching Fee: $750.00
Custom made Greene & Greene handles are available for purchase at shop for $70 each. This cabinet is featured in the HGTV Video, as well as some of the class work. (Watch it on our "Welcome" page.)

Art Glass/Stained Glass for above cabinet
This class teaches the foil method, developed by Tiffany over 100 years ago. We will begin with the design and make our own patterns through glass cutting and soldering. We will be making the glass panels that fit the cabinet door made the week prior. This is the panel made in the HGTV video on our site. All tools are provided and will be offered for sale in the class. Many colors of glass are available and the choice is yours. One former student said that the most difficult task and the most fun were selecting the glass colors. I found working with glass surprisingly enjoyable because it is so different from working with wood, and I think you will enjoy it as well.
